Sustainable Blog Edition #42. 7 At-Home Sustainable Product Swaps

Single use products are large contributors of waste in our day-to-day lives, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. The good news is there are many alternative product swaps that don’t cost a fortune. We carry a couple solutions here at lazy hype and we set out to find even more changes that you can make at home!

1: Grocery Bags

Single use shopping bags are a massive unnecessary waste with endless alternatives. You probably have a million tote bags shoved in a closet that you got from various events. All it takes is keeping a couple under the seat in your car to pull out whenever you go to the grocery store. Lazy Hype also makes the cutest organic cotton mesh totes which are perfect for a variety of uses.

2: Trash Bags

Trash bags are another single use product which most people don’t seek sustainable alternatives. There are a variety of options on the market including compostable bags by companies like Grove Co.

3: Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes are a tricky object which needs to be regularly replaced for hygiene. There are options which at very least eliminate the plastic waste and instead are made of more environmentally friendly materials. Lazy Hype sells the Mother Earth Bamboo & Charcoal toothbrush with charcoal bristles. The bamboo handle is also compostable as long as the bristles are removed before disposing.

4. Food Storage

Glass tupperware is a great solution for multi-use food storage but sometimes you need options that take up less space. Plastic zip lock bags contribute greatly to land figs even if used multiple times. Our favorite sustainable swap is Ecophant Beeswax Food Wrap which are both reusable and biodegradable.

5. Dish Scrubbers

Limiting synthetic dish sponges is easier than ever with this walnut dish sponge. These scrubber sponges are plant-based and do not contain harmful toxins like triclosan, a pesticide commonly used in sponges that is linked to health problems and environmental damage. Public Goods also creates a variety of at home alternatives which are worth checking out

6. Make-up Pads

Make-up pads are another single use product which people waste by the hundreds per year. Reusable pads have become a very popular alternative as they are washable, more effective, and less wasteful. Milk make-up sells a great set of vegan and cruelty free pads which are washable & come with a mesh bag to make them easier to clean.

8. Straws

Plastic straws are one of the top 10 items found every year during the International Ocean Clean Up. More than 1 in 3 marine animals have been found entangled with plastic waste. It is time to end single-use plastic waste once and for all. Reusable stars have become all the rage in the last few years, now it is easier than ever to save the turtles. These amazing stainless steel straws come with scrubber brushes for easy cleaning.
